Don't waste your time with Robocopy or Hobocopy or any such tools. They do NOT truly copy files that are in use !!
Robocopy will in fact give you an error message saying that the file is in use by another process .... crap !!! Yet it is hailed as a utility that can copy files that are in use.
Go ahead and disbelieve me.. Lol ! in fact, go ahead and download your Robocopy, Hobocopy, or Hoffman Utility SpotLight, after you download it just open a file in some program which locks its files once open, or better still, just go into your windows XP/Vista temp folder and find some flaXXX.tmp files (flash objects/videos that are currently in use by your browser .... so u have to have your browser running duh.. play some video from YouTube and check for the flaXXX.tmp files in your temp folder ) I know for a fact that the adobe Flash Player will lock its temporary flash files (.swf files that are currently playing through the flashplayer plugin of your browser.. yes they will be named as flaXXX.tmp files while they're playing in your browser)
Now my friend.. go ahead and COPY those flaXXXX.tmp files.... use Robocop (or is it Robocopy), Hobocopy, or Hoffman Utility SpotLight, or "whatever" you have... you will NOT be able to copy those files.. period !!!! :))
Ok, now the name of the program which can truly copy files that are in use... here it is :
Use a program from NovaStor Corporation,
The program's name is NovaBackup
This program will copy files that are in use perfectly
I am done !
Haha... were u expecting some affiliate links or what ? Nope, none of that here.. you can find NovaBackup yourself :) I am NOT selling or even interested in selling this NovaBackup thing. I am mentioning it to help you if you have "suffered" from the issue of trying to copy files in use and you've tried everything and all things failed !!!
With NovaBackup, unfortunately you will have to Backup the files, either individually or the entire folder... then RESTORE your backup to a different location ... Vollla !!! U've achieved a mysterious in-use-file copy (NovaBackup is UNSTOPPABLE on this job!!).
Don't waste your time with Robocopy or Hobocopy or Hoffman-bla-bla.. or any such tools. They do NOT truly copy files that are in use !! They just fail and give u the DAMN SAME errors about the file being "in use" YET they all claim they can copy files that are in use ... DISAPPOINTING!!!
#######################################################
Follow up June 2011 !!!
Hi Guys... I found a way to get over this problem !!! AFTER spending the whole YEAR on this issue, I found THE SOLUTION. I must first apologize for the above post, where I am saying Hobocopy does Not work, etc, lol !! I don't believe in DELETING wrong thins that I wrote earlier or incorrect information that I shared with people earlier. I believe in HONESTLY apologizing for any wrong info I shared or propagated in the past :))
So I apologize for the above original post, where I am saying Hobocopy/Robocopy does Not work, etc, lol !! Not true at all.
Ok, this method below worked fantastically for me
cls
net start vss
md C:\InUseFiles
md C:\InUseFiles\FlashVidTemp
xcopy "C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Local Settings\Temp" "C:\InUseFiles\FlashVidTemp" /e /c /i /h /r /y
md C:\InUseFiles\FlashVid
move /y C:\InUseFiles\FlashVidTemp\fla*.tmp C:\InUseFiles\FlashVid
rd /s /q C:\InUseFiles\FlashVidTemp
start explorer C:\InUseFiles\FlashVid
exit
Yes, I must admit this example above requires a little knowledge of using the Command Line (DOS Prompt / CMD.exe)
You can take these commands above and drop them into a DOS Batch File (.bat) if you know anything about batch files. Then you can run them all at once by running the batch file, however you'd have to change the names of folders on each line to reflect the appropriate folders/directories/paths that you want to work with.
In this example above, you can see that I am copying the Windows Temp folder , which typically has a LOT of FILES-IN-USE , but you can notice that I also first START THE VOLUME SHADOW SERVICE, then After copying ALL the whole TEMP folder I actually MOVE away some of the files I am interested in ... I move them to another folder "FlashVid" , and then I simply delete the FlashVidTemp folder (which is a copy of the Temp folder) to clean up. What I remain with, is the FlashVid folder, which contains the Fla*.tmp files which are ALWAYS-IN-USE when you try to copy them.. but this little trick WORKS ALL THE TIME.
I think the WHOLE POWER OF IT lies in STARTING the VOLUME SHADOW SERVICE (VSS).
Thank You !

Moses ADSL For Dummies - All About Telkom ADSL in Layman's Terms
Moses ADSL For Dummies - All About Telkom ADSL in Layman's Terms
are you a newbie on ADSL, are you Lost and confused on what ADSL is all about. maybe English is NOT your mother tongue, perhaps you only learned English at school maybe you're an Indian south african or Chinese south african or Black/African south african and you just want to know about ADSL before you buy it or you just want to learn about it because you've heard too many people talk about it saying Broadband, ADSL, etc... oh, well..... welcome to my article, you've come to the right place !!!
i will be using informal south african english, in fact i will deliberately over-simplify my story so that you will be able to follow me with ease. i want to speak to you in a simple way (hopefully)
i might revisit this article later on and add more information on it
what you're reading now is version 2010-03-28 of this article. this article was originally written back in 2007 and published on another blog of mine.
please note that when i say DSL, i mean the SAME thing as ADSL, these two words mean exactly the same thing in this article, Ok !!!
Now i am going to explain ADSL by making an example of a person who wants to put a new ADSL line in his house. i think this is the best explanation instead of giving you a difficult Definition of terms like A means B or X refers to Z .... i think that would NOT be a very nice way to introduce you to ADSL if you are a newbie or non-technical person.... that would only confuse you more on ADSL !!
Ok, so you want to buy a new ADSL line....
First of all you have to call Telkom on 10219 and ask them if ADSL is available in your area if they say yes, then tell them that you want to apply for a telephone line, normal telephone line ! Yeah, you heard that right... you want to apply for a normal plain old-fashioned telephone line same as the ones from the 1970's. if you already have a normal telephone line, then there is No need to apply for a new telephone line. Just jump quickly to Step 2 below ( ***** Step 2 ***** )
if you have a prepaid line, you need to convert it to a normal telephone line, which means you will now pay at end of month every month, No more prepaid !!! Telkom Prepaid line does NOT work with ADSL, i repeat.. if you HAVE A PREPAID line then ADSL will NOT be allowed on it, sorry !
the cost for installing a telelphone line = R383 once-off
the cost for renting a telephone line = R111 per month
during the application for a telephone line they will do a credit check on your ID Number !!
they may also ask you some questions about yourself, etc
then they will give you a reference number for your application when they finish talking to you.
the application for a telephone line can be done fully on the phone when you call Telkom on 10219 (No need for papers & forms to be filled with a pen and signed!)
sooner or later a technician will come to your house to install the telephone line when the technician is finished installing your telephone line he will tell you what your Telephone Number is. He will write it down and give it to you.
***************** Step 2 ******************
now you have a Normal Telephone Line
call Telkom on 10219 again but now this time tell them that you want to apply for DSL line (also called the DSL service)
please Note that when you apply for a DSL line it is NOT a separate New telephone line !! what happens is that your SAME normal telephone line will be **Enabled** for DSL or high speed broadband connection. This will NOT destroy the telephone line ... the telephone line will Still be able to make normal phone calls and receive normal phone calls as a normal phone Ok :-) Applying for a DSL line (or DSL service) simply means that you want to **Enable** your normal telephone line to do DSL high speed broadband internet connection ...... whatever that means!! Let's just say High-speed internet connection on your same normal telephone line, Ok.
during the application for your DSL line they will do a credit check on your ID Number while you're on the phone
!! ... yes credit check again same as when you applied for Telephone line ! they will also ask you some questions about yourself, again ! they will also offer you to buy a DSL modem/router from Telkom for a cost of = R800 or similar
if you have your own DSL modem/router then Don't accept to buy another new modem/router from Telkom. also if you can buy your own ADSL modem/router then its fine, you can use that own modem/router of yours.
they might also offer you to buy their **ADSL account** from Telkom or an **ISP Account** or an **ADSL access account** ....all these 3 things mean same thing!! they might offer you to buy a 24-month contract from Telkom ...and they might tell you that you will get a Free modem/router and 3-gigabytes free per month if you sign their 24-month contract
if you Dont want to sign this 24-month contract then just say ...No thanks.
They may also offer you to buy a DoBroadband bonus product or a Telkom Closer-Call product
If you Don't need any of these or if you just want an ADSL line then just say again... No thanks.
during the application for DSL line tell them that you would like to do your own ADSL Self-install ... insist that you would like to do a self-install and that you are Capable of doing this yourself !! They might tell you that No, a self-install is only available on Old or Existing phone lines and it's NOT allowed on new applications !! if they say this to you then tell them that you understand and that it's Ok and then hang up the phone and smile ... i will show you how to try your own Self-install regardless of whether they tried to scare you about telling you that ADSL self-install only works on old existing phones, etc !!!! Don't be scared by these seemingly show-stopper stories you get from the Telkom call center girls !! Remember these girls at the Telkom call center are trained to sell you just about anything that Telkom can offer you, and they get a commission for these extra sales !!!
at the end of the application they will tell you that they need to send a technician AGAIN to test your line then they will give you a reference number for your DSL application they might tell you that it will take 6 weeks ... but the technician will normally come within 5 days only ! So Don't go on holiday Ok.
this Second Technician is NOT the same one who installed the telephone line !!
you will NOT be charged any money for this technician coming to your place :-))
this time the technician will Enable and Test DSL capability on your telephone line
the technician will do some basic DSL quality checks, he will check DSL Port availability on your local exchange and he will also check DSL line sync speed, etc .... whatever that means ...Don't worry about it !!!
sooner or later the technician will certainly come to your neighbourhood to do the DSL capability tests
please note that this second technician he may Not come to your house directly.
he might come to your street and you might notice him working at your street corner for a few minutes. that's Him
!!! that's your ADSL guy !!
****** The total cost of owning a DSL line ********
Ok, before we go any further, let's just do a quick round-up to clarify the TOTAL COST for ADSL right now. The cost breakdown will be as follows :
the cost for installing a telelphone line (if you Don't have a phone line already) = R383 once-off
the cost for renting a telephone line = R111 per month
the cost for a Telkom technician when he comes to connect your ADSL modem/router, POTS filters and PC is R490 once-off, but you can avoid this cost entirely if you choose to do a Self-install.. i will show you how to do this very soon somewhere below.
the cost for renting a DSL line is either = R150 per month or R320 per month or R413 per month.. it depends on the DSL line speed that you take... 384-kbps or 512-kbps or 1024-kbps
Hold on, that's Not all .... then again you're still going to pay for your ISP Account per month also (between R260 to R600 per month).. i will talk about the ISP Account very soon Ok !!
yeah.. so you must have some money chana !!
once your telephone line is Enabled for DSL, you now have a DSL line or an ADSL line that's running off that SAME telephone line !
if you have chosen to do an ADSL Self-install then it means you told the Telkom people that you will do your own Self-install when you applied for your ADSL line above. You may have to go fetch your DIY kit from your nearest telkom office...... but hold on...... from my recent findings i learned that ONLY people who sign a 24 month contract with Telkom will get a free DIY kit (and a Free ADSL modem/router) .... sorry about that guys, but Don't worry.. there's a solution still ...
If you choose Not to sign the contract, then you can buy your own ADSL modem/router (about R600) and also buy your own POTS filters (about R50 each) from a computer shop or electronics shop or a hardware shop or from Game / DION, etc. You can also buy these POTS filters from your local Telkom direct shop. You are going to use the POTS filters to protect your normal phone & fax machine from ADSL high frequencies
take a breath, small break !
please continue on next post below .....
=====================================================
Moses ADSL For Dummies - All About Telkom ADSL in Layman's Terms ...continued-2
.... we are continuing on the article/post above
You have 7 days to attempt doing your own Self-install of ADSL
This ADSL self-install actually is NOT an installation of ADSL at all !! You Can’t actually ** install ** an ADSL line yourself ... only a Telkom technician can do that !! Also you Can’t actually Enable your phone to do ADSL by yourself, again ONLY Telkom and their technicians can do that ! ... what you are able to do yourself is the following ...
1. Connect the POTS filters to your wall sockets
2. Connect your ADSL router to your wall sockets
3. Connect your normal phone and fax to the POTS filters
4. Connect your PC to the ADSL router, and
5. Activate your ADSL line from Any PC that’s already on the internet, you can also try using that Same PC that you have just connected to your ADSL modem/router... But it may Not work due to reasons I cannot share on this blog right now. But you must TRY IT FIRST before you conclude anything about whether it works for you or Not.
needless to say...by the time you do these things above, then the ADSL line itself should have ALREADY been installed or Enabled by the Telkom technician !! the Second Technician who tested the line sync speed and quality checks ... he's the guy who actually Installed or Enabled your ADSL line !! so basically you only connect the POTS filters, router, and PC.
******* Connecting your POTS filters, your router, and your PC (that's the so-called ADSL self-install) *******
Ok, now Listen very carefully what i am going to say .... i am going to teach you how to do an ADSL self-install in ONE paragraph
Basically when you do an ADSL self-install your goal is that you want to Protect your fax machine and phone from the ADSL high-frequencies. This means that your phone or fax machine must NEVER connect directly to the telephone socket on the wall anymore Ok !! If you have a phone and a fax machine in your house/office then the cable that runs from the phone to the wall socket must pass through the POTS filter before it reaches the wall socket (same story for fax machine!!). A POTS filter is actually designed such that you can pass the cable from your telephone/fax through that POTS filter before reaching the wall socket. This means that on the OTHER side of the POTS filter the cable continues to reach the wall socket and that the phone or fax-machine is going through the POTS filter to reach the wall socket. Read those two preceding sentences SLOWLY and make sure that you understand them crystal clear. Ok, now the cable that runs from the ADSL router to the wall socket it must NOT pass through a POTS filter ... that one it must go directly to the wall socket. Guys... that's ACTUALLY all there is to it !! That's the so-called ADSL self-install ... Nothing more than that :-))
Another interesting fact : if you will Not use your telephone line to make telephone calls or if you will Never connect a normal phone to that telephone line and you Never connect a fax machine to that telephone line then you will NOT need any POTS filters at all !! Becuz you have Nothing to protect from ADSL high frequencies (No phone, No fax!) ..ok let's get back to the topic.
Now you have to make sure that you've connected your ADSL router properly... it's got 2 main cables.. a Power cable and a Telephone line cable
Of course yes, I know the router has got other holes where you can connect other things onto it ! There's a hole (sometimes it's 4 holes) which allows you to connect your PC to your ADSL router. You use a normal PC network cable - normal LAN cable or Flylead or Cat-5 cable as they notoriously call it. In fact, in the box of your ADSL router there might be a network cable supplied to you for free inside your router box. Connect that cable (the network cable) to your PC on one end and then connect it to one of the ports on your router, so the PC is now connected to the router.
Sometimes there's also a USB cable that you may connect from your PC to your ADSL router if your modem/router is a USB modem... i'll talk about that one very soon, Ok. Now you can switch on your modem/router and your PC too. Switch on the Modem first, wait 1 minute, then switch on the PC.
If you have a CD that came with your modem then you may have to install the drivers for your modem, but I don't recommend this method of working, because it means you are using your router as a USB modem/router. So just hold on to that CD for now, DON'T rush to put it in or use it right now. Keep it away for now. It is only needed if your modem is a USB Modem !
Now we need to play around on your ADSL Modem and check a few things to ensure everything is correct. Make sure your modem is switched on and that it is connected properly to the PC as well as to the telephone wall socket as i explained above.... alright
Now let's clarify once and for all the story about USB mode and Network mode. there are two kinds of ADSL modems, there is a modem which is a Broadband Router .. this kind of modem normally has 4 network ports/holes at the back and then also 1 extra port/hole for connecting to your Telephone line or ADSL line which goes to the telephone socket on the wall. on the Broadband Router the other port/hole is obviously for connecting the electricity or power plug (the power adaptor). the 4 network ports you use them if you have two PC's or more PCs in your house and you want those PC's to share the ADSL Broadband Router equally. each PC will be able to control the ADSL Broadband Router and use the router directly to get connected to the internet through the router.
another kind of ADSL modem is the USB Modem. It is just a simple single PC modem. it can only be plugged into a single PC, this kind of modem is normally cheaper and it is normally a USB modem/router. it is NOT normally called a "router" as such. on one side you connect it to your PC with a USB cable or we could say you connect it directly to a USB port on your PC. On the other side you connect it with a telephone cable to the Telephone socket on the wall (which is your ADSL line).
sometimes you will have a broadband router that's ALSO GOT A USB port, such that you now have a modem that can work BOTH as a USB Modem and as a Router. Of course that would be a very versatile modem ! In this case please IGNORE that USB port for now, since it is MORE POWERFUL and MUCH BETTER to use the Network Ports rather than connecting the modem via the USB port.
******** Playing around with your Router Modem ********
(a Router Modem ?? mhhhh... what a confusing name! Let's just call this one a Broadband Router or "the router" for now for the sake of being concise, ok)
so, if your Modem is a Broadband Router, then you can access its settings as follows.....
please Note that the following settings/instructions apply only if you have a Broadband Router, they DON’T work if you have a USB modem or if you are using your router in a USB mode !! so the following settings/instructions apply ONLY if you did **NOT** connect to your modem via a USB cable between your PC and the modem. So let's be clear, for this section here, you must have only a network cable connected between your PC and the Router.
to access the settings of your Router, open your web browser (Internet Explorer/Firefox/etc) on your PC and try to open any of these websites below (watch out for those dots! Use them exactly as written below )...
http://192.168.1.1
http://192.168.1.254
http://192.168.0.1
http://192.168.0.254
http://10.0.0.2
http://10.0.0.1
http://10.1.1.1
if your router is powered on and its alive and active, you will FIND IT at ONE of these suggested websites above. it will OPEN and RESPOND when you try to open one of these websites above (try them all, you'll find it at one of them). normally it will ask you for a username and password, then you know you've FOUND YOUR Broadband Router and you can now control its settings and fix the configuration on it :) If you CANNOT find your router at ANY of the websites/addresses above, and your web browser is constantly telling you that PAGE NOT FOUND or ERROR LOADING PAGE or WEBSITE CANNOT BE OPENED, etc.. then you probably need to put your computer into DHCP mode. Please jump quickly to a section below labelled "Putting Your Computer Into DHCP Mode". Do the things in that section and then come back here when you are able to find your router at one of the addresses above.
When you open one of the websites/addresses above, it will ask you for a username and password, then you know you've FOUND YOUR Broadband Router and you can now control its settings and configuration :)
Alright, when it asks you for a username/password, give it this.....
username = admin
password = just try first to use these words below as your password .....
admin
password
private
conexant
marconi
telkom
billion
netgear
cisco
linksys
secret
NOTHING (just try to leave it empty and press Enter or Ok)
if the modem Refuses to accept all of the passwords above pls check inside your ADSL modem manual for the proper default password if default password is also wrong then please check behind the modem, hold the modem in your hand but keep it switched on, check ALL over around the modem ... look around it carefully you might find a hidden button that you can use to Reset the modem to the original Factory default settings !! many times this will be a hidden small/thin needle-hole where you can push a needle into it to reset the modem to its factory settings.
now try again to use the passwords above and also try the default password mentioned in your modem manual.
when the password is accepted your browser will show you a nice screen with ALL of your router's settings
************* If you have a USB Modem *************
if your ADSL modem is NOT a Router Modem, which means it’s a USB modem, then you can change its settings by using the CD that came with the modem. Insert the CD into your computer and install it by following its instructions on the screen. The CD instructions will normally allow you to change the settings while you are installing the CD.
If you need to change the modem's settings AFTER you had already installed the CD, you can try to look for the modem's settings by clicking :
Start Button > All Programs > YourModemName > Etc..etc
try to find a menu that will allow you to change the settings of your modem,
you could also take a look on your Desktop to look for an icon that will allow
you to open up the modem and change the settings on your USB modem
you can also check in Control Panel to find an icon that will allow you to change the settings of your modem. Open your computer's control panel and first just look around inside control panel and check if you can see any item called with your Modem's Name, try to find something in there that has your Modem's name or something that will allow you to change the settings of your ADSL USB modem, right-click it and choose Properties or Configure or Change Settings
******** Ok, now this applies for Both a Router Modem and a USB Modem ********
once you're inside your ADSL modem settings screen please First thing you must try to check the STATUS of your modem !! it must show you the Download speed or Downstream speed or Signal rate or Line Sync speed, the speed must be something like 192kbps or 384kbps or 512kbps or 1024kbps or 2048kbps or 4096kbps .... it must NOT show you a speed of Zero !! Then it must also show you an upload or upstream link speed or outbound Signal Rate ... in the same way it must NOT show this speed as Zero !! if it shows you Zero on Upstream or Downstream link speed then please confirm the following settings on your modem.......
browse around right there on your modem settings screen... if you see any of the following settings on your ADSL modem... change them or just confirm that they are set to Correct Values as follows ...
Encapsulation: RFC 2516 PPPoE LLC
Handshake protocol: G.dmt
VPI: Virtual Path Identifier, you must set this one to be = 8
VCI: Virtual Channel Identifier, you must set this one to be = 35
Service Category = you must set this one to UBR
Quality of Service = you must set this one to Enabled
Service Type = you must set this one to PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)
NAT = you must set this one to Enabled
DHCP = you must set this one to Enabled
DNS server = you must set this one to obtain the DNS server automatically
PPPoE Username and Password = Ok, now about this PPPoE username/password, let's talk about it on the paragraph below
Now on the PPPoE username/password you must enter the username from your "ISP Account" if you have already bought an ISP Account from your favorite internet service provider (ISP) company. See my explanations below about ISP Accounts (Step 3 Buying an ISP Account). NB: Make absolutely sure that you are looking at a box that wants you to enter PPPoE username/password.. it MUST NOT BE a box asking you to change the router's SECURITY username/password or a box asking you to change the ADMINISTRATOR username/password !! it must be about PPPoE username/password, ok
! if right now you do NOT have a PPPoE username/password, then you can enter this username for now =
guest@telkomadsl
and this password = guest
but this will only allow you to browse only 1 or 2 websites in South Africa because it is a Telkom test PPPoE account, or as they call it.. it's a Telkom Guest Account. you really need to buy your own ISP Account soon if you want to browse the internet openly and reach all websites fully all over the world. With the Telkom guest account you will probably only manage to open the Telkom website, which is =
www.telkom.co.za
and the Telkom Do Broadband website, which is =
www.do.co.za
only those two websites will open !!! Nothing else will open on the internet so you must soon ensure to buy your own ISP Account so that you can enter your own PPPoE username/password into the router/modem instead of entering the Telkom guest account which is very limited because it is meant for testing purposes only. That's why it opens only 2 websites and it blocks ALL OTHER websites that you might try to open ! I explain everything below about ISP Accounts (in Step 3 which talks about ISP Accounts).
Please note: some of those settings in the list above are ONLY valid for the South African ADSL network (Telkom ADSL!!) And Don't worry if you DON’T SEE ALL of the settings above in YOUR Router/Modem, some of them will NOT show on your specific modem/router ! That's Ok ! Keep going forward and confirm/fix the ones that you find/see in Your router/modem. The only important ones to me really are these ones =
Encapsulation = must be RFC 2516 PPPoE LLC
VPI = must be 8
VCI = must be 35
Service Type = must be PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)
DHCP or DHCP Server = must be Enabled
DNS server = must be set to obtain the DNS server automatically
PPPoE Username and Password = that's your username/password for your ISP Account
Another quicker way to handle the settings above for your router is to Look for a WIZARD menu or something called a Quick Config or Quick Setup or Quick Wizard there on your router settings screen !! Open it and then follow its step by step instructions to do a quick step by step fast setup. When it asks you for the settings, you can then just use the settings above or just confirm that the settings that you see already in your router they are matching the settings above nicely.
after changing any of the settings above please remember to look for a menu or a button that allows you to SAVE or APPLY the new settings onto your modem/router and then try to find the menu/option that can allow you to RESTART the modem/router or REBOOT the modem/router. When you SAVE and RESTART the modem/router, you will see that the modem/router will immediately switch off completely and after a short while it will switch on again on its own.
Everytime when the modem/router has been restarted or when it has Switched off at any time I suggest you must RESTART YOUR COMPUTER(s) too !!! Don't take this for granted .... i am Not joking ... that's exactly what you must do !!! If you SAVE and RESTART the modem/router, then you must follow by RESTARTING THE PC (all PC's) also afterwards !!!
take a look at the modem/router again. if the ADSL Link Light on the modem is a permanent green light, then it means you have a stable ADSL link. it means your modem has locked onto the ADSL line and it is running or syncing with the ADSL line in a stable manner. if the green light is blinking FOR EVER or yellow/orange light For Ever then it means your modem is still trying to lock onto the ADSL line and it is NOT yet running or syncing with the ADSL line in a stable manner !!! in that case just check again carefully ALL your modem settings above...the VPI, VCI, etc.. Also check all the cables, Disconnect them and Reconnect them one-by-one... DONT be lazy to disconnect and reconnect the cables, it's ONLY a FEW cables (3 or less). make sure every cable is perfectly connected. Make sure your Telephone line cable (which is the ADSL line) is connected to the back of the modem/router and that it is also connected on the other end to the telephone wall socket. if ADSL signal light is still blinking slowly for EVER (or it's yellow/orange light for EVER) then you probably need to call Telkom for assistance !!!!! Tel: 0800-375-375. They may be able to help you over the telephone. you can call them on that SAME telephone line that you're trying to fix ADSL on it ... the telephone itself will work just fine :)) the problem is on the ADSL-part of the same line ! if you call them using the same telephone line then the call will be FREE becuz it's 0800 toll free line, but if you choose to call them on your cellphone then you're going to SPEND a lot on your airtime !
let's take a small break again ! go make some tea ... !
please continue on next post below .....

Moses ADSL For Dummies - All About Telkom ADSL in Layman's Terms ...continued-3
.... we are continuing on the article/post above
Ok, now your modem is syncing with the ADSL line in a stable manner .... good !
********* Configure your PC ************
The next thing now is to configure your PC ...
Before you bother to do the lengthy steps below, just try this quick shortcut first. First just restart your PC and then check if you are already on the internet (open www.cnn.com or www.facebook.com AFTER you restart your PC). If you see that you're on the Internet, then you are FINE, you DONT have to do anything more, well perhaps you can go to **** Step 3 **** below to just have a quick look at the information on how to buy an ISP Account :)
i will only be able to advise you how to configure your PC if you are using Windows XP on your PC... you'll have to try your best to do a similar thing if you are running Windows 2000 or Windows 98 or Windows 2003 or Windows 2008 or Windows Vista / Windows 7 or Linux Ubuntu, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, etc.
well, first we'll try a simple procedure, which is to just put your PC into DHCP mode and then test to see if you're on the internet. If this works, then you Don't have to do or try the other stuff below, if it doesn’t work, then you'll have to try something else, which is to create a WAN MiniPort connection in your control panel. A WAN MiniPort connection is also known alternatively as a "Broadband (PPPoE)" connection, especially in Windows Vista and Windows 7.
************ Putting Your Computer Into DHCP Mode *****************
Please Note : This will work for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista and also Windows 7. :)) So you can smile if you're on Windows Vista or Windows 7 !
To put your computer into DHCP mode, do this :
open the start menu on your computer, click the Start button
then click Run
type cmd [and press enter]
if you're on Windows Vista or Windows 7 just click the start button and then
immediately just type cmd
then press Ctrl-Shift-Enter on your keyboard to open the Black Command Window as a Computer Administrator
the black command window should open up
on the black command window, type this next line below
netsh -c interface dump > c:\SaveIP.txt
[and press enter]
then, type these 3 lines below one by one, please ensure to press ENTER at the end of each line, ok. DO NOT make spelling mistakes when you type these lines below ! do NOT type CARELESSLY with sticky fingers ! Please include the double quotes EXACTLY as written below, Ok.. type exactly what you see below :
netsh interface ip set address "Local Area Connection" dhcp
netsh interface ip set address "Local Area Connection 2" dhcp
netsh interface ip set address "Local Area Connection 3" dhcp
let's do some more, type these 3 lines below one by one, hit enter at the end of each line
netsh interface ip set dns "Local Area Connection" dhcp
netsh interface ip set dns "Local Area Connection 2" dhcp
netsh interface ip set dns "Local Area Connection 3" dhcp
let's do some more again, type these 3 lines below one by one, hit enter at the end of each line
netsh interface ip set address "Wireless Network Connection" dhcp
netsh interface ip set address "Wireless Network Connection 2" dhcp
netsh interface ip set address "Wireless Network Connection 3" dhcp
let's do some more (last ones), type these 3 lines below one by one, hit enter at the end of each line
netsh interface ip set dns "Wireless Network Connection" dhcp
netsh interface ip set dns "Wireless Network Connection 2" dhcp
netsh interface ip set dns "Wireless Network Connection 3" dhcp
Ok, now these 12 lines above.. that was a BRUTE FORCE DHCP mode activation ! LOL !
what you must do now is to RESTART YOUR PC.
but you need to DO IT the RIGHT WAY !!
a) shut down the PC and switch it off
b) switch off the router
c) switch on the router
d) wait 1 minute for the router to initialize
e) switch on the PC
____________this is the end of putting your computer into DHCP mode !
after restarting your PC you can now TRY opening the following two websites
www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl
www.do.co.za
if they open then you are in a good position.. because all you need now is to buy your ISP Account and then go and change that username and password of guest@telkomadsl to your own ISP Account's username/passsword. once again remember, if you change anything or any settings in the router/modem, it is best to SAVE the new settings and then restart the PC properly using the Restart Procedure in the preceeding paragraph above, ok.
if the above 2 websites DONT open, then you need to try the WAN MiniPort procedure below :
Ok, if you're using Windows XP, do like this...
Open Control Panel > Network Connections
click on ..... New Connection Wizard
choose ..... Connect to the internet
choose ...... Setup my connection manually
choose ...... Connect using broadband connection that requires username & password
Enter your ISP Name, this is Not a serious setting... just relax and use any nice description such as "My New ADSL Connection" or "My Web Africa ADSL connection" or "My MWEB ADSL" or "My AXXESS ADSL connection" or "My OpenWeb ADSL connection"
username = use the username they gave you when you bought your ISP Account (or put guest@telkomadsl )
password = use the password they gave you when you bought your ISP Account (or put guest if u're using the Telkom Guest Account)
i am sorry guys... i realize i might be confusing some people with this ISP Account story, feel free if you want to jump quickly to **** Step 3 **** below to learn how to buy an ISP Account and then come back here quickly to continue... sorry about this little back & forth... this PPPoE username/password story is all about ISP Accounts.
Leave those other check boxes as they are, then click... Finish
if you want to see or view your new connection that you just created, go again to
Control Panel > Network Connections
if you want to Connect to the internet ...
Right click the connection you just created and choose Connect, then choose Connect again...
cross your fingers now !!!!
if it gets connected... then CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!! Wow ... you go Girl ..now you can truly browse the internet on your high speed broadband connection at last ... after so many days of preparation and waiting and Lots of settings ..... wow congratulations !!! ADSL is working For you too !!!
if it fails ... Ok, take a deep breath then try again to connect ... try about 6 times over and over ..... DONT be too impatient with it
If it fails to connect and says AUTHENTICATION or USERNAME/PASSWORD is wrong, then you must redo the steps above until you get to the screen where you must FIX THAT USERNAME/PASSWORD (retype it CORRECTLY, please!!!)
But if it's just failing without saying Authentication or username/password problems, then you are out of luck girl, at least for now ... please check again carefully ALL your modem settings above...the VPI, VCI etc.. are they REALLY ALL CORRECT & PERFECT ?? Just check again all the cables, Disconnect all the cables (PC network cable, modem USB cable, modem Power cable, cable from modem to Telephone wall socket) and then Reconnect them ALL again, reconnect ALL the cables and make sure they are securely and nicely connected... then Restart again both your modem and your PC...... if it is still failing to connect then i just want you to know that i am really Sorry... I am Really Sorry that you've had to go through so much pain and stress and that you've spent endless moments reading through manuals and books and i'm so sorry that you've had to check so many things and the time & effort you've wasted in the process. believe me i know what it feels like.... hopefully you've learned something about ADSL despite your disappointment with ADSL at the end of the day.. there's only one last thing you can try now... you need to call Telkom on 0800-375-375 !!!! however that will probably cost you R490 because they're going to come out to your house and do the install ... i'm sorry about that too, Ok.
Are you on Windows Vista and Windows 7 ??
***********************************************************
Although I had said I won't help you if you're on Windows Vista or Windows 7, because I hate Windows Vista and Windows 7, I've decided to do you a favour, since you are determined enough to keep reading despite my negative promise. It shows you are motivated enough to find a solution and you did NOT "assume" that simply because someone says he WON'T do something.. it means you must NOW GIVE-UP on your side or think it's impossible ! Lol ! . . Alright, Let's take a quick detour to help those who use Windows Vista and Windows 7 :
Ok, If you have Windows Vista / Windows 7
Click on the start button on the bottom left corner of the screen.
From here please select "Control Panel" from the right menu bar.
Vista offers two separate looks for viewing the control panel; Classic view and Vista view.
Determine which "look" you have and continue.
* From Vista view select "Network and Internet"
* From Classic view select "Network and Sharing Center".
In the Network and Sharing box, we will start by selecting = Connect to the Internet
from the prompt for "Choose a connection option",
click Next.
The connection wizard will ask you "Do you want to use a connection that you already have?"
You must choose - No, create a new connection.
The options for connection types are different within Windows Vista from the ones in Windows XP.
It will ask you if you are attempting to connect via a broadband connection.
Select Broadband (PPPoE) and click Next.
Next screen will ask for login information to access the ISP’s services. This is where your ISP Account username and password must be entered if you have bought an ISP Account!! If you Don't have ISP Account right now well you can enter username =
guest@telkomadsl
and password = guest
in the connection name just put = This Is My New ADSL Connection
Click "Allow other people to use this connection" checkbox
That will eliminate any potential issues for multi-user PC’s. Believe me, you don't want stress with "security" and all that crap !
Damnn !!! that was LOOOOOOONG .... you see..that's why I hate Windows Vista and Windows 7 alright, now Click Connect.
Once you've clicked CONNECT, it should connect to the internet.
If it fails to connect and says AUTHENTICATION or USERNAME/PASSWORD is wrong, then once again as I've advised above on this issue of AUTHENTICATION.. you must redo the steps until you get to the screen where you must FIX THAT USERNAME/PASSWORD (retype it CORRECTLY, please!!!) AUTHENTICATION is ALWAYS a problem of WRONG password or WRONG username you ENTERED.
But if it's just failing without saying Authentication or username/password problems, then you are out of luck girl, at least for now ... call Telkom on 0800-375-375 !!!! however that will probably cost you R490 because they're going to come out to your house and do the install ... i'm sorry about that, Ok.
For those of you who are Still HOT in the Game and it's Good Going for you so far . . . alright, let's MOOOVE dolls ....
I believe that now your modem can now connect and sync to the ADSL line in a stable manner and that you can NOW open these two websites
www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl
www.do.co.za
********* Activating your ADSL line *************
Now I want you to try and visit the Telkom ADSL website to ACTIVATE your ADSL line or your ADSL service as they call it ... open this website =
www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl
i am sorry to tell you this .... but if your new ADSL PC cannot open this website then you may have to use ANOTHER PC that's already connected to the internet in order to do this verification... we have to MOVE ON now, sorry about that Ok .. i know it will cause you some inconvenience to go and do verification from ANOTHER PC that's already on the internet, but we are NOT going to be able to solve "connection failures" of all types now. Ok once you are on the verify website, just Enter the telephone number and order number that's linked to the ADSL service. I learned recently that some people were entering their cellphone numbers on this verify website !!! Doll, come on now... you must enter your Telkom telephone number and the Order Number for your new ADSL line here, ok ??? duh :)) The order number is the SAME reference number that you got when you applied for ADSL line at the beginning. I hope you have NOT lost it !
Another important thing.. if your ADSL reference number (order number) looks like this =
36/1992014
then I want you to enter it on the verify website like this =
1992014-36
i Don't know why the website wants the reference number (order number) to be swapped around like this ... but that's how it works!!!
Now click on the "Verify" button
Alright ... now wait up to 5 minutes for verification to do its work
It will say =
"This test will verify the availability of your ADSL service."
Ok, now if the verification is successful, then it might tell you to wait for another 30 minutes, which is yet MORE time . . . . . . . . . AGHHH NO!! we Don't have 30 minutes now .... so let's just give it 10 minutes for this EXTRA time, ok. If 10 minutes is over ... now you can close that verify website... Don't worry if it says it's STILL BUSY doing bla-bla-bla, it's Ok, just close it once 10 minutes is over ! Now you are almost ready to browse the internet using your High speed boardband connection (your ADSL
connection!!).... but we still have to iron out a few more things first...
If you fail to activate your ADSL line, you will have up to 7 days to keep trying with your tricks and to Fix and check your mistakes above. If you fail to activate/verify the ADSL line successfully after 7 days then Telkom will send out a technician to your house to help you. if this technician comes to your house to help you, then the cost for this will be = R490 !!! you Cannot refuse this technician ! You also Cannot ask to be given more time !
What does this mean ??? Does this mean that you should NOT attempt doing a self-install becuz you might mess up something ?? is this a penalty fee which Telkom is charging for people who attempt an ADSL self-install and they Fail to do it properly within 7 days ?? .... well let's think about it ... if you attempt to do a self-install.. then you stand a chance of saving R490 if you succeed. It is actually so Easy to do the ADSL self-install but some people are Scared that if they Don't do it properly then Telkom will charge them the R490 as a penalty becuz you messed up something !! .... No, no, no ...guys it's NOT like that Ok :-)))) think about it again ..... if you do NOT try to do a self-install at all and you choose to have a Telkom technician come to your place to connect the POTS filters for you then you are GUARANTEED to pay the R490 (you Don't pay less for NOT trying !!) ... on the other hand if you try to do the self-install and you Fail you Don't pay MORE for your trying either, you still pay R490 also ... so basically you should always try the self-install First and try to connect those POTS filters yourself First becuz even if you Fail to do it right then you would still pay R490 just like someone who NEVER tried a self-install at all ... but at least you stood a chance of saving that R490 becuz you tried ... if you succeed in your trying then you would have saved R490 just like that :)) You would also save weeks of waiting!! Guys it takes longer and its harder to connect a new Television out of the box onto your house electric plugs than to do an ADSL self-install !!! doing an ADSL self-install is a very Simple/quick job.
well you now have completed your ADSL Self-install and your ADSL Activation ... congratulations!
now you need to buy a suitable ISP Account or ADSL Package or ADSL Account .... all these 3 things they mean same thing to me !!!
small break ! last break.. huhhh !!!
please continue on next post below .....
=================================================
Moses ADSL For Dummies - All About Telkom ADSL in Layman's Terms ...continued-4
.... we are continuing on the article/post above
************ Step 3 - buying an ISP Account ************
an ISP Account will cost you about = R 260 per month. An ISP Account works like the "airtime" of your cellphone. So in this case it is the "airtime" for your internet usage. it slowly runs out as you use it during the month and it will get finished if you use it too much or it can last a long time if you use it only a little bit. you use it by browsing the internet, visiting many websites around the world, like using Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, Facebook, etc. That will start to slowly eat up your ISP Account and it will get finished after some time. it can last a long time (like 2-3 months) if you use it only a little bit, but it can also last only a FEW days if you are like me and you overuse it too much or if you have a child like a teenage boy in your house !!! :)) He's going to download a pile of MP3's and view so many videos on YouTube all night long he'll probably finish it within a day or two :) In fact, within just a few days he will be on porn websites and downloading GIGs of pornography too !! Just check the download logs on the router's reports after a month and it'll leave you surprised, if NOT UTTERLY SHOCKED !! But you can get a BIG ISP ACCOUNT that will exceed his appetite for online games, video, movies, and whatever is out there driving his appetite ! With a big ISP account he will NOT be able to eat it up so fast, even if he is a die-hard online addict ! He will only get tired of browsing eventually and you'll find him ASLEEP on the chair many days with headphones still stuck to his head !! Shame ....
Ok, for R260 per month you would get a standard 3-gigabyte ISP Account, there are other smaller accounts for lower amounts (R80 per month) and other bigger accounts also (R600 per month).
An ISP Account is a package that allows you to browse the internet on your high speed DSL line and pay for all the Megabytes or Gigabytes of files you download (i'm talking about things like your Yahoo email usage, Google usage, Hotmail usage, MSN usage, MP3 downloads, Video downloads, MySpace usage, YouTube usage, Facebook usage, Rapidshare usage, Online gaming, file downloads, skype usage, online chat, ebay usage, friendster usage, amazon usage, flickr usage, blogger & internet blogs usage, etc, etc... anything you do on the internet). your DSL account will be counting up all the megabytes or gigabytes of files you download from the internet and websites where you spend time browsing around. when the total gigabytes for all your internet usage shows that you have now exceeded more than 3 gigabytes, you'll be cut off, you must either wait for month end and you will get again your Free 3 gigabytes for the new month (after you pay for that new month!).... if you Don't want to wait for month end then you must buy more interim or fill-up gigabytes meantime (recharge your gigabytes ... top-up your gigabytes) during the month. Sometimes you will finish all your Free 3 gigabytes too early before month end !! to recharge your gigabytes during the month it will cost you about R70 for 1 extra gigabyte R140 for 2 extra gigabytes R210 for 3 extra gigabytes and so on, Ok.
But relax, some ISP Accounts offer 5 gigabytes Free per month and other accounts offer 10 gigabytes free per month
...but you will pay More per month on these accounts!
you can buy an ISP Account from Telkom themselves or from many other so-called Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Apart from being the backbone tele-communications provider, Telkom are also an ISP, Telkom has a website called
www.DoBroadband.co.za
or just
www.do.co.za
on that website they sell cheap accounts from R200 per month and big accounts for R600 per month
another good place to shop around for ISP Accounts is on the Hellkom website
www.hellkom.co.za
click on "ISP Prices" then click on "ADSL"
you'll get a whole lot of Internet Service Provider companies (ISPs) from all over South Africa who are all selling ISP Accounts. they sell ISP Accounts for low prices.
some companies will offer you a 1 gigabyte account for R50 per month
others will offer you 30 gigabyte account for R2700 per month !!
others will offer you Unlimited gigabytes account for R4500 per month !!! that's an Uncapped account !!
you can click at the top on the words
1GB 2GB 3GB 4GB 5GB 7GB 10GB 20GB 30GB Uncapped
to choose the amount of gigabytes that you feel you will need for the month
they will also show you how much it will cost you to Recharge your gigabytes if you finish them too quickly during the month. they show you the price per 1 extra gigabyte .... such as R70 per 1 extra gigabyte ... it means you can get 1 extra gigabyte for R70 once-off when your gigabytes got finished too early during the month... that's the top-up prices :)
you know i recently bought a nice prepaid ISP Account.. it works very nicely !! i Don't want to use my credit card on cheap websites and i also Dont want to pay by online bank transfer ... sometimes i get irritated by it ... so i discovered the Prepaid ADSL Recharge vouchers. they work just like normal Vodacom cellfone recharge vouchers !!!
Currently it seems like the only company/ISP that is selling Prepaid ADSL Vouchers (which are actually prepaid ISP Accounts) is a company called AXXESS (www.axxess.co.za) !!
The prepaid gigabytes from AXXESS are wonderful ... you can buy them from ANY Pick n Pay store anywhere in South Africa !! You can also buy them from almost any Engen garage filling station !! it costs about R68 for 1 gig, R136 for 2 gigs and so on. You just tell the people at Engen/PicknPay that you want an AXXESS Broadband Prepaid Voucher for 1 Gigabyte or 2 gig or 3 gig etc ... if the cashier at the Pick n Pay or Engen shop seems doubtful be strong to him and insist to him that he must check ALL the vouchers on his machine and look for the one with the spelling of "AXXESS" ..... once he finds it he'll print it out and charge you ... if you Can't find it at Engen garage then try another Engen garage ... but with Pick n Pay it is available at ALL the Pick n Pay shops country-wide!! Ok, on the slip you get a once-off username and password that you use to recharge your gigs ... you just enter this username & password as your PPPoE username / password on the router/modem settings or you enter them into the WAN Mini-Port screens if your connection above ended up working only with the WAN MiniPort procedure.
Apart from Axxess, the ONLY other ISP company I will recommend is OpenWeb (www.openweb.co.za) . They are fantastic ! You can visit their website and check the type of ISP Accounts they are selling. I am using them now for 3 years. I have NEVER found anything better. And yes, I have already tried SO MANY of the OTHERS already.... no comment :)) The ONLY ISP that managed to truly satisfy my requirements for ISP Accounts was OpenWeb, full stop !
Ok, now you've got the username & password from buying your ISP Account. You can now enter this username/password as your PPPoE username/password into the router/modem settings or into the WAN Mini-Port screen. Use the instructions above in the section where I talk about PPPoE Username & Password. So now you will be recharged with your Own Account (your Own ISP Account) and you've got new gigs and you can browse for the whole month, that's good :)) This will be a regular thing you'll be doing every month, buying a new ISP Account or paying for your regular ISP Account in order to RECHARGE YOUR GIGS EVERY MONTH so you can browse for the Next 30 days, ok.
Here is some confusing terms terminology that you will come accross when you buy an ISP Account :
when they say Shaped or Unshaped, they mean if you are going to use Online gaming websites, or maybe you use file sharing websites such as Bittorrent or Kazaa or eMule then you need an Unshaped account. But if you use the Normal websites then you can just take a Shaped account, when i say normal websites i mean websites such as the ones i mentioned earlier on above ... Yahoo email usage, Google usage, Hotmail usage, MSN usage, MP3 downloads, etc... any website that you can browse by using only Internet Explorer or Firefox or Mozilla or Opera ......as long as you're NOT using other unusual programs or non-standard programs such as Kazaa or Bittorrent or eMule or Online gaming or File Sharing programs. So basically you only need an UNshaped account when you use Non-standard internet programs.
The standard internet programs are normally Internet Explorer or IE, Firefox, Mozilla, Opera, Maxthon, Avant Browser, Outlook, Outlook Express, Thuderbird, and a few others, they are all known as "web browsers" and "Email clients" .... you can also use "Download managers" as standard internet programs (Flashget, Download accelerator, Getright, Godzilla, Filezilla, CuteFTP, or anything called an FTP client or FTP_something or something_FTP) ...for all these standard internet programs, you Don't actually need an UNshaped ISP Account. But if you start using programs that have words like "Torrent" or "Torrents", "BitTorrent", "P2P" ... then you know you are NOW using NON-STANDARD internet programs !!
****************** Step 4 - we're Done **************
yeah guys.... that's about ALL you need to know really about ADSL
in fact, i have gone beyond ADSL to introduce you to other things that are more than just ADSL
Pheww !!! I can't believe I wrote all this junk above at this level of detail ... :))
i want to thank you ALL guys and i appreciate your time for reading this article !!!! i'm sorry to you the Nerds and Experts .... i apologize to you Nerds and Gurus .. i know you will find my article biased and unprofessional somewhere somehow and you may have the propensity to criticize it and call me names and call me a spammer etc etc ..... but please forgive me guys, i know you know too much about computers and internet and that you will be tempted to eat me alive for the things i've said in this article, but please guys think carefully again before you criticize me on this article..... if you were an absolute newbie on ADSL and you see the endless list of confusing options and accounts, terms and buzzwords, you would be Lost and confused all the time. sometimes we need someone who can give us Actual information with good estimated prices and up-to-date facts in One simple place :-)) so please guys be forgiving on me if you know too much about ADSL and internet service, this article is for Newbies, Ok !!!! and you can see I've put quite a lot of personal effort to compile it, verify it and do all necessary research to ensure that i have complete information, and then share it openly with everyone at NO cost .... just think about that effort, Ok.

are you a newbie on ADSL, are you Lost and confused on what ADSL is all about. maybe English is NOT your mother tongue, perhaps you only learned English at school maybe you're an Indian south african or Chinese south african or Black/African south african and you just want to know about ADSL before you buy it or you just want to learn about it because you've heard too many people talk about it saying Broadband, ADSL, etc... oh, well..... welcome to my article, you've come to the right place !!!
i will be using informal south african english, in fact i will deliberately over-simplify my story so that you will be able to follow me with ease. i want to speak to you in a simple way (hopefully)
i might revisit this article later on and add more information on it
what you're reading now is version 2010-03-28 of this article. this article was originally written back in 2007 and published on another blog of mine.
please note that when i say DSL, i mean the SAME thing as ADSL, these two words mean exactly the same thing in this article, Ok !!!
=====================================================
Alright, when it asks you for a username/password, give it this.....
username = admin
password = just try first to use these words below as your password .....
admin
password
private
conexant
marconi
telkom
billion
netgear
cisco
linksys
VPI = must be 8
VCI = must be 35
Service Type = must be PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)
==================================================
